British royal family news has revealed that the royal budget could be slashed by a third following the outbreak of the coronavirus. The drop in tourism in the United Kingdom means that up to £18 million may be lost from the royal budget. The revelation was uncovered by The Sun newspaper after they spoke to a senior official of the Royal Household.

The loss in money has come after various tourist attractions that are typically open for tourists have been closed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. That has led Lord Chamberlain Earl Peel to reveal that staff members in the Royal Household could be faced with the prospect of having their wages froze.

The loss of money due to the outbreak could also mean that some projects funded by the family could be halted. One of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom is Buckingham Palace, while visitors are also welcomed to Balmoral during typical summers.

The Sun has reported that staff have been warned that the income could fall by a third this year. In 2019, the Royal Household earned over £70 million through tourism, with the latest figures showing that the fund has lost £18 million already. The figures were revealed in a recent email, where Lord Chamberlain reiterated that the Household wasn’t ‘immune’ to the pandemic.

A contingency plan has already been put into place by the Household, with the email stating that they were expecting weeks and maybe months before business returned to normal. The reported also revealed that expenditure has been suspended, while there is also a recruitment freeze currently in place too.

Lord Chamberlain revealed that he is aware that there is uncertainty at present, and issued calm despite the difficult times ahead. It has also been revealed that Balmoral’s doors will be closed this year for the first time since 1993. It was revealed that the safety of visitors could be assured during this period.
