Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Faces Pressure to Give Up City of London Freedom Honour Amid Epstein Fallout

The controversy surrounding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor continues to intensify, with renewed calls for him to relinquish one of his remaining ceremonial recognitions — the Freedom of the City of London honour — in the wake of ongoing fallout linked to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Despite growing public pressure, officials say the situation is not straightforward, and the honour cannot simply be removed.

    Pressure Builds Over Ceremonial Title

The Freedom of the City of London, granted to Andrew in 2012, has become the latest focus of criticism as scrutiny over his past connections to Epstein continues to resurface.

Campaigners and commentators have argued that he should voluntarily give up the honour, pointing to its symbolic value and the reputational damage tied to his wider royal controversies.

However, the governing body responsible for the honour has indicated there are limits to what can be done.

spokesperson for the City of London Corporation said they had “carefully considered whether it is possible” to revoke the honour but concluded they are “not able to do so.”

Why the Honour Cannot Be Easily Removed

Unlike many modern awards, the Freedom of the City can be granted in different ways, and in Andrew’s case it was reportedly given by hereditary right. That distinction makes it legally and procedurally difficult to strip away.

As a result, even amid heightened public criticism, the honour remains in place unless voluntarily surrendered or unless the governing rules change.

Epstein Fallout Continues to Shadow Andrew

The renewed focus on Andrew’s ceremonial status comes as his broader reputation remains under sustained scrutiny due to his long-standing association with Epstein.

Over the past several years, he has been stripped of official royal duties and titles, but individual honours like this one have proven harder to address.

    Symbolism Under the Spotlight

While the Freedom of the City of London is largely ceremonial today, it still carries historical significance — and that symbolism is exactly why critics argue it should no longer be associated with Andrew.

Yet despite the calls for action, the rules surrounding the honour mean it remains unchanged for now, keeping the debate firmly alive in public discussion.
