In a chilling display of modern-day gullibility, a 53-year-old French woman fell victim to a sophisticated romance scam, parting with a staggering €830,000 to a con artist posing as Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt. This isn’t a tale of a lonely heart seeking companionship; it’s a cautionary tale of how AI-powered deceit can exploit human vulnerability on a grand scale.

The scam began in February 2023 when the woman, an interior designer, received a message on social media from an account claiming to be Brad Pitt’s mother. Flattered by the attention, she soon found herself engaged in daily conversations with an account posing as the actor himself. “He knew how to talk to women; it was always very well done,” she later confessed, blinded by the illusion of a romantic connection.

Of course, this “poetic and affirming” relationship came at a price. The scammer, employing the latest AI technology, presented the victim with convincing fabricated photos and videos of “Brad Pitt,” further solidifying the illusion. This was followed by a series of increasingly desperate pleas for financial assistance, ranging from “customs fees” for extravagant gifts to urgent “cancer treatment” costs, allegedly hindered by his ongoing divorce proceedings with Angelina Jolie.

Tragically, the woman, going through a difficult divorce herself, became entangled in the scammer’s web of deceit. Driven by a desperate desire to help her “beloved” Brad, she transferred nearly €1 million, oblivious to the fact that she was being played by a digital puppet master.

The illusion shattered when the woman stumbled upon news coverage of Brad Pitt with his actual girlfriend, Ines de Ramon. The realization that her “soulmate” was a fabricated persona, a digital figment of a scammer’s imagination, must have been devastating.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of the digital age. While technology offers incredible possibilities, it also empowers fraudsters with unprecedented tools for deception. In this case, AI-generated imagery was weaponized to exploit human emotions, leaving the victim financially and emotionally devastated.

The public reaction to this news has been a mix of sympathy and skepticism. While many expressed empathy for the victim, others couldn’t help but question her judgment. “Why not Google whether Brad Pitt was in a hospital before sending money?” one user scoffed, highlighting the inherent absurdity of the situation.

Ultimately, this incident serves as a cautionary tale. In the age of AI, skepticism is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity.
