Princess Diana passed away twenty-seven years ago today, August 31st, marking the anniversary of her death and England’s loss.

Diana Was Known As “The People’s Princess”

The Princess of Wales died on this day in 1997 after sustaining injuries following a car crash in Paris. She had just had dinner at the Ritz with Dodi Al Fayed, and her drunk chauffeur decided he wanted to show off his impressive “driving skills” as he fled at top speed, apparently to avoid the paparazzi who were pursuing Diana.

Despite efforts to save her, Diana died around 4:00 a.m. that morning. Police bodyguards would have never allowed her to get into that car on that fateful night, but Diana’s police protection had been removed upon her separation from Prince Charles.

They called her “The People’s Princess. ” She truly loved everyone, especially children. Many moments of Diana’s life as the Princess of Wales stood out. She played a significant role in modernizing the royal family, and when she took on a cause, she did so wholeheartedly.

During the early years of the AIDS crisis, fear and misinformation contributed to the stigma of those who were suffering from the illness. However, Diana was not deterred. In 1987, she launched the UK’s first HIV/AIDS unit at London Middlesex Hospital. It exclusively cared for those with the virus.

Diana changed the way people viewed HIV and AIDS. She was a pioneer in AIDS-related compassion and tolerance. The Princess shook hands with an AIDS patient without gloves and dispelled the myth that the patient could transfer the disease through human touch. She was dedicated to the cause throughout her life.

Diana Was Open About Her Personal Struggles

Diana also had a passion for helping those less fortunate. In 1992, she became the patron of Centrepoint, a charity that helps homeless children and youth. She provided food, housing, and employment to those affected by homelessness.

The Princess took her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, to homeless shelters to encourage their interest in humanitarian work for the cause. Today, William continues his mother’s work with new initiatives to end homelessness.

Diana took part in the famous Panorama interview in 1995. Martin Bashir coerced her into the television appearance in which the Princess got more personal than any other royal in history, possibly setting the stage for Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2021 interview with Oprah.

Prince Charles And Camilla Parker Bowles To Step In For Queen Elizabeth At Maundy Thursday Service

Diana admitted to the world that her husband, Charles, was having an adulterous affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. She also spoke openly about her issues with postpartum depression, bulimia, and self-harm, which broke down walls regarding the topic of mental health. She allowed the public to see the royal family as real people who were complicated and flawed, just like the rest of us.

Princess Diana Will Never Be Forgotten

The late Princess Diana used her celebrity status to highlight important causes. She challenged the idea of what it meant to be part of the royal family. She did many good deeds and was, at one point, linked to over 100 charities.

Today, we remember Diana for her public service, sense of humor, empathy, and the revolutionary way she modernized the monarchy. Her sons follow in her footsteps, as they are the patrons of several charities and champion countless philanthropic causes.
