Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived in Columbia on Thursday. The country’s Vice President, Francia Marquez, greeted them. She invited the couple after watching their Netflix docuseries.
Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Spoke About Online Safety
The Duke and Duchess spent the first day of their quasi-royal tour speaking to bored-looking schoolchildren about online safety as Meghan urged them to be “self-reliant and not tech-reliant.” They lectured a group of about twenty students between the ages of 12 and 18.
After that, Harry and Meghan watched a spirited theatrical performance of the play, “Kiss the Hummingbird,” at the Delia Zapata National Centre for Arts.
They also met with Marquez for tea, coffee, and Pan de Bono, which is Columbian cheese bread, and exchanged gifts.
The central theme of their visit to Columbia was to highlight digital safety. To champion their cause, they went to Universidad EAN and spoke at a summit.
They also attacked misinformation on social media and blamed fake news for triggering violence. In July, 80 adults were sentenced following violence that broke out in the UK after three girls were murdered in Southport.
Prince Harry told the audience,
“What happens online in a matter of minutes transfers to the streets. People are acting on information that isn’t true.”
He said,
“We are no longer debating facts. For as long as people are allowed to spread lies, abuse, harass, then social cohesion as we know it has completely broken down,”
Of course, Harry and Meghan also brilliantly observed that “AI is scary.” Harry also appeared to take a shot at Elon Musk during his speech, noting that Musk has been widely criticized for spreading fake news.
The Sussexes Ignored Travel Warnings
“While we are debating and discussing how to solve the problems of digital media, a very small group of powerful people are getting richer and richer, which is a fundamental flaw in the system.”
Harry and Meghan are expected to meet Columbia’s Invictus Games team on day two of their tour. Team Columbia is the only South American country participating in the Games.
They also visited a local school called Colegio La Giralda. Harry and Meghan saw the historical memory museum, where students shared art they had created. It commemorates Columbian history.
Harry couldn’t resist “dad dancing” as the Sussexes were treated to a rendition of students singing cumbia songs. Harry also helped plant a tree outside.
Marquez invited the couple and said that Harry and Meghan’s visit was “very special.” She said that Princess Diana was scheduled to visit in 1997 before she died.
“I think Prince Harry being here today after that dream of his mum’ of visiting this country as an opportunity to show the best of our nation, to show who Columbians are. We are people who, in the midst of adversities, do everything possible to give the best of ourselves,”
Marquez exclaimed.
Harry and Meghan’s tour in Columbia comes after Harry said that the UK was “too dangerous” for his wife, children, and himself.
Despite clear warnings from the US and UK to avoid parts of Columbia, the Sussexes seem to only want to go where they are favored and revered. It demonstrates their desperate need for approval and attention.
