Prince William plans to beef up the dramatically slimmed-down monarchy with younger royals. This week’s Buckingham Palace garden party boasted an impressive 8,000 guests.
Queen Elizabeth’s Monarchy Was Expanded As Charles’s Vison Was Slimmed Down
The Prince of Wales invited his cousins, Zara and Mike Tindall, Peter Phillips, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie, to their invites via text message.
Prince William hosted the party on behalf of King Charles and his wife, Camilla. Kate Middelton continues to recover from her cancer treatment. He wanted some fresh faces whom he could talk with to be included.
William appears to take inspiration from his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who, unlike her son Charles, favored a more expanded monarchy.
Elizabeth had the family she grew up with and loved so much, and she attended royal engagements and parties with her to present a united front as a family. The Queen had 31 first cousins who often helped her. Some included Princess Alexandra, Prince Edward, Prince Michael, and Prince Richard.
It looks like William will follow in his grandmother’s footsteps when he becomes King. William is the next chapter in the history of the monarchy. He has a rare opportunity to modernize the Firm in his own vision.
After the party, Princess Eugenie posted this message on Instagram,
“I was delighted to support my family and to meet some special individuals at the Buckingham Palace garden party who have gone above and beyond to support their local communities and the country.”
While the Queen’s no half-in, half-out rule still applies, William has taken steps to include her grandchildren in royal parties and events to help represent the monarchy more completely.
The Younger Royals Have Been Supportive And Helpful
Princess Beatrice, for example, provides considerable relief to the royal family during the recovery of the King and Princess Catherine.
She will likely appear as an unofficial royal at Royal Ascot and is expected to attend with the King. Beatrice will apparently fill the gap left by Kate at some royal appearances this summer.
Prince William considers Beatrice and Eugenie very much loved and trusted members of the royal family. The Firm’s non-working members are considered a significant asset to him.
The Prince of Wales would extend similar invitations and include the young royals again as he fills in for his father, who is undergoing cancer treatment.
The slimmed-down model of the monarchy has long been associated with the King, and from his perspective, the Firm had too many working members. He wanted William, who is next in line to be King, to be at the forefront of the royal family, as well as Kate.
January 2020 changed everything. Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down as working royals, which was very upsetting to the Queen. They had to rely on their core members.
William has a very different idea of how to modernize the monarchy than his father has.
A royal insider said this about the royals’ younger generation:
“They are very willing to step up and do more at this current time to help. They’re very fond of their cousin and uncle and want to do everything they can to support them. And they believe in the institution they grew up in.”
