David Soul, well known for playing Detective Kenneth Hutchinson in the beloved television series “Starsky and Hutch,” has sadly died. According to a family source, the actor passed away on Thursday in a hospital in London from a long term illness. In his last moments, David was surrounded by his loved ones.

Soul’s wife Helen Snell said “beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family. He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend.”

David struggled with a number of health issues over his life, chief among them being chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He blamed his long-standing habit of smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for the onset of COPD. David, who became a pop sensation in the 1970s, portrayed Hutch, the blue-eyed, blonde-haired investigator who stood in for Paul Michael Glaser’s investigator Dave Starsky. From 1975 to 1979, he directed a few episodes in addition to appearing in all 92 of the show’s episodes.

David started his Hollywood career in the middle of the 1960s, landing little TV parts in series like “Flipper,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” and “Star Trek” before becoming well-known as Hutch. Notably, David was cast as one of the police officers in the 1973 Dirty Harry movie “Magnum Force” by Clint Eastwood, who saw his potential early on.
