High Court judge Justice Nicklin ordered Prince Harry to compensate the publisher of the Mail. The amount of almost 50,000 pounds in damages was awarded. Harry neglected to have the judge decide the case without going to trial.
Prince Harry is Suing Associated Newspapers Limited Over an Editorial
The judge said the legal fees would need to be questioned if both sides could not agree on a set total. Harry is suing Associated Newspapers Limited over an article. It is claimed that the Duke of Sussex attempted to conceal his efforts to retain publicly funded protection in the UK.
Harry supposedly did so after his exit from the royal family. The judge determined that the publisher had a “real prospect of succeeding in demonstrating that the Duke was trying to mislead the public.
The judge set the libel trial for next year. The case involves an article in print in February 2022 about Harry’s legal proceedings against the Home Office.
The newspaper group includes the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday. Harry’s lawyer claimed that the news article accused Harry of lying. Also, he was keeping the details of his suit to maintain police protection a big secret.
ANL denied this, with their lawyer saying that the article was based on the journalist’s opinion. The opinion did not harm Harry in any way.
The high court had previously ruled that Harry had sought “far-reaching and unjustifiable” privacy when he decided to keep his case against the Home Office a secret.
Harry had also claimed that he had offered to pay for police security for his family, but the offer was denied. However, the Home Office refuted these claims and said it never happened.
The Publisher Said it Was an “Honest Opinion”
The Duke’s lawyers said that the contradictions in the story about Harry not being willing to pay for security for his family were an “attack on his honesty and integrity.”
The publisher hit back and said that the article was an “honest opinion.” The article did not harm the Duke’s image or reputation.
The truth was that Harry had only made the offer to pay for security after the proceedings were over. The judge ruled that Harry was
“responsible for attempting to mislead and confuse the public regarding the actual position.”
The judge felt that an honest person would not be trying to silence the opinion in an article and that Harry was not being truthful—big surprise.
It was revealed that no such offer for protection had occurred. The Home Business Office and the Executive Committee for the Security of Royalty and Public Figures have no record. Harry was trying to spin the story.
Harry has several cases involving British newspaper groups. There is a massive lawsuit against the Daily Mail publisher for invasion of privacy claims and illegal information gathering. Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, and other British celebrities are suing the newspaper group.
Harry accused the company of hiring private investigators. They listened in on phone calls and access bank and medical records.
Harry has said that the changes in his family’s level of security have put them in danger. They need security when he, Meghan Markle, and his children visit the UK.
