Actor Matthew Perry, who died on October 28th, told everyone how he wanted to be remembered a year before he passed. He didn’t wish Chandler Bing’s character on “Friends” to be the first thing that popped into someone’s mind.
Perry, who was candid about his alcoholism and substance abuse issues, wanted to be known for helping people. He wanted people to remember that if someone asked him for help to stop drinking or drugging, he was the one who gave them support and advice.
Matthew Wanted to Be Remembered for Helping Others Like Him
He explained while he was promoting his memoir during an interview last year, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” discussed how he wanted to be thought of after he passed, “I would like to be remembered as somebody who lived well, loved well, was a seeker,” Matthew explained.
“That’s what I want. The best thing about me, bar none, is that if somebody comes to me and says, “I can’t stop drinking, can you help me? I can say yes and follow up and do it.”
Matthew started drinking when he was 14, and by the time he was 18, he was a full-blown alcoholic. He spent three of his ten years on the set of “Friends,” with no memory of it.
Matthew Perry said he wouldn’t show up for work drunk, but he was often “painfully hungover.” he also became addicted to Vicodin, and at one point, he said he was taking 55 Vicodin a day.
He did stints in rehab, and he went about 15 times. He spent the past couple of decades fighting his addictions. Matthew continued,
“When I die, I don’t want “Friends” to be mentioned first. I want that to be the first thing that’s mentioned. And I’m gonna live the rest of my life proving that.”
Matthew did a lot of good work helping people who were struggling. He worked to support others who had the same issues. He even transformed his former Malibu Beach home into a men’s sober living residence called Perry House.
Matthew Perry Had Something Important to Say
During the interview, he said it was essential for him to help people,
“I can’t describe it. Something spiritual fills your heart; you see the lights coming on for a new person who didn’t understand.”
Matthew took his acting work very seriously, but he took his work guiding and helping fellow addicts who needed to be saved even more seriously.
In 2021, Perry said that he spent $9 million on getting sober and that it was a daily process. Perry also authored a play called “The End of Longing,” a personal message from him to the world. It was an exaggerated form of him as a drunk, and when he talked about it, he said, “I had something important to say to people like me and to people who love people like me.”
Perry passed away at the age of 54 Saturday night from a possible drowning in his jacuzzi. He had sent his personal assistant out on an errand, and when they returned, Perry was discovered unresponsive. Perry’s passing is shocking and devastating. We will certainly remember him for more than just his role on “Friends.”
