“Friends” actor,’ Matthew Perry, who played Chandler on the show, died yesterday from a possible drowning in his jacuzzi at his home. Shock and heartbreak are being felt by his former castmates and other Hollywood stars who have been paying tribute to Perry since the moment they heard of his death.
Perry’s “Friends” co-star, Lisa Kudrow, who played Pheobe, is devastated, and a source close to her says she is hoping he didn’t take prescription medicine before his death.
Kudrow says his death doesn’t “seem real” to any of the Friends actors. She has said she will be present at his funeral and may even adopt his pup.
Maggie Wheeler, known for playing one of Perry’s long-term love interests on the show, has said,
“What a loss. The world will miss you, Matthew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too-short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”
Another “Friends” co-star, Selma Blair, who played the character Wendy in the ninth season, said,
“I’m broken. Brokenhearted. Sweet Dreams, Matty. Sweet Dreams.”
Co-creators and the Executive Producer of Friends Make a Joint Statement
The co-creators and the executive producer of “Friends,” Kevin Bright, David Crane, and Marta Kauffman said in a joint statement,
“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend, Matthew’s passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives. He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliché to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words.”
“From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment, not just to his work but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”
Actresses Pay Tribute to Matthew Perry
Elizabeth Hurley, who starred with Perry in the romantic comedy, “Serving Sara,” paid tribute to Perry.
“RIP, Matthew Perry. So sad to hear the news of his passing. He was an incredibly talented comedian and a lovely man.”
Actress Kelly Cuoco, who plays Penny on “The Big Bang Theory,” paid tribute to Perry and thanked him “for the laughs” and said that he was wonderful to watch on “Friends,” saying he gave her so many lessons in comedic timing.
Shannon Doherty, whom Perry appeared on one episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 with, was kind enough to post on Instagram, expressing her “shock” and “sadness” about his death. She remained friends with Perry all these years and praised his incredible sense of humor.
Gwenyth Paltrow shared on her Instagram,
“I met Matthew Perry in 1993 at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts. He was so sweet and so much fun to be with. We drove out to swim in creeks, had beers in the local college bar, and kissed in a field of long grass. He had shot the pilot of “Friends,” but it had not aired yet. He was nervous, hoping his big break was just around the corner. It was.”
Mira Sorvino reacted with,
“Oh no! Matthew Perry, you sweet, troubled soul. May you find peace and happiness in heaven, making everyone laugh with your singular wit.”
Powerhouse and masterclass actress Viola Davis left this message on social media,
“This is devastating. Your book shifted so many close to my heart. The people no one sees and most throw away. It was a gift. Beyond the joy that you brought to so many, your heart reigned supreme. Rest well….know that you brought love.”
