Bill Maher is famous for saying things no one else would dare say. He recently remarked that the Writer’s Guild of America’s demands were “kooky” and even said that “no one is owed a living as a writer.”
He said this during a discussion with Jim Gaffigan on the “Club Random” podcast.
Maher has announced that his show will be returning without his writers. Even though he seemed to feel that some of what the writers were fighting for was unreasonable. Maher also says, “The writers have issues that I sympathize with and hope the concerns are addressed to their satisfaction. However, they are not the only people with issues, problems, and concerns.”
When talking about the writers not being the only people with problems, Maher refers to the rest of his staff who need to work for a living. He aims to bring everybody back to work because the people below the writers are also struggling.
Other people in the industry don’t make as much money as the writers. These people deserve compensation as well. Maher admitted that he agrees with the writers concerning streaming platforms having to report viewership information.
Real-Time Returns Without Writers
“Real Time with Bill Maher” is set to return to the small screen on September 22nd at 7 p.m. Unfortunately for viewers, Maher’s show will be missing some crucial vital elements that make it stand out as one of the funniest talk shows on the air today.
Certain Real-Time staples include the opening monologue, the desk piece, “New Rules,” and his infamous editorial pieces. Maher intends to continue with the Real-Time tradition in which he interviews his guests, which will, apparently, continue.
The Writers Guild of America responded by stating that they would continue their tradition of picketing struck shows that were in production during the strike.
Although Maher is also a WGA member, he should adhere to the rules during a strike. Imagining that the show can continue without him violating the rules is difficult.
This news comes after certain daytime talk shows are returning without their writers. “The Drew Barrymore Show” is one example.
Because of Barrymore’s choice, The National Book Awards has dropped her from being the host.
Maher Will Need His Writers

Recently, the above five hosts combined their efforts and created the podcast “Strike Force Five” to make money to support the staff of their shows as the strike goes on.
Maher even admitted that the show could not be as good without their writers. Sadly, Hollywood writers have been on strike since May 2nd.
There is no telling how long it could continue, and if Maher intends to do shows, he will be missing critical elements of his performance that make it so great.
Whatever the case, Maher has made his decision. He is coming back to TV whether he has writers or not.
