According to a royal specialist Omid Scobie, the Royal Family has not yet confronted racism, even though Prince Harry referred to some occasions as examples of ‘unconscious bias.’
Omid Scobie Slams Royal Family’s Racism By Debunking Harry’s Unconscious Bias Claims-‘Recollections May Vary, That Is Racism’
The Duke of Sussex made those comments during an ITV interview with Tom Bradby when he was asked to comment on his controversial comments about racism in the Oprah Winfrey interview.
During the course of that process, Harry and Meghan Markle alleged that someone in the Royal Family had reservations over their son, Archie’s skin colour. While that may have been the case, they refused to name the person responsible.
This led to claims that the firm was exhibiting racism after which Harry stated this was not the case, describing it as ‘unconscious bias.’ In his comments at the time, Harry remarked: “It’s not racism, but unconscious bias, if not confronted, if not acknowledged, if not learned and grown from, that can then move into racism.”
And yet, Omid doubled down on his beliefs that it was racism. Not only that, but it must also be noted that Scobie is very close to Meghan, with some even going on to refer to him as Markle’s friend in the media.
In response to Harry’s comments, Scobie stated: “I know Harry called it unconscious bias but I’m still going to call it racism. I think it is only not racist when it is unconscious, the second someone makes it conscious to you and you try to minimise it or skirt the topic, or recollections may vary it, that is racism.”
The response towards Scobie’s claims were damning. This was on the basis that Harry had admitted using racial slurs himself, which included calling a fellow soldier the p-word.
One person wrote: “Harry is saying his family have unconscious bias, this coming from a man who used a racial slur about a fellow soldier. Hypocrisy or what.”
