While receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, Eddie Murphy gave aspiring comedians some wise counsel: never mention Will Smith’s spouse.

Murphy was alluding to Smith’s notorious slap at the Academy Awards ceremony in 2022. During the course of that process, the actor made a splash when he struck Chris Rock for jokingly criticising Jada Pinkett Smith’s hairstyle.
Pinkett Smith debuted her bald head, as she has been open about her battle with alopecia and the hair loss it causes. Chris Rock may not have been aware of her situation when he made an insensitive comment. With that being said, Murphy could not help but laugh about the situation.
In his comments, he said: “I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success…It’s very simple. Just do these three things. Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f—king mouth.”
While Will did go on to apologise to Chris, it still tarnished his reputation. Smith’s slap of Rock resulted in a prohibition from their event for a decade. Smith, who had won the Best Actor for “King Richard” on that notorious evening, admitted that he was ‘fogged out.’ As such, this was the reason of his failure to apologise at the time.
In some prior comments, Will remarked: “I reached out to Chris, and the message that came back is he’s not ready to talk, but when he is, he will reach out. I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
The fans on social media were far from impressed with what Eddie had to say. A certain subset felt this incident had been overused, and that is why his comments were seen as corny. One person wrote: “That whole speech was cringe.”
