Gwen Stefani Denies Allegations Of Cultural Appropriation By Bizarrely Claiming She Is Japanese

Gwen Stefani has responded to allegations that she has taken advantage of Asian culture for her own gain.

The 53-year-old vocalist discussed her Harajuku Lovers line fragrance amid her regular usage of Japan’s subculture over the years, and caused some surprise after she kept asserting that she was Japanese.

Even though she had no familial ties to Japan due to her Italian-American father and Irish-American mother, the artist maintained that she still identified with being partially Asian.

Furthermore, after years of listening to her father talk about his business trips to Japan as a Yamaha Director of Marketing, the time she spent in Tokyo felt like a second home.

In her comments, Gwen said: “That was my Japanese influence and that was a culture that was so rich with tradition, yet so futuristic [with] so much attention to art and detail and discipline and it was fascinating to me. I said, “My God, I’m Japanese and I didn’t know it.”

She remarked that her passion for Japanese culture is innocent. The star conveyed that it bothers her when people disapprove of her appreciation and enthusiasm for ‘something beautiful.’

Much in the same way, in an interview with Paper magazine in 2021, Stefani discussed the criticism she was subjected to over her 2004 solo album, ‘Love. Angel. Music. Baby,’ and the claims of cultural appropriation that went with it.

During this period, she was frequently accompanied by a troupe of Japanese-American female dancers referred to as the Harajuku Girls. In her comments at the time, she remarked: “If we didn’t buy and sell and trade our cultures in, we wouldn’t have so much beauty, you know?

“We learn from each other, we share from each other, we grow from each other.” It is fair to say that Gwen will continue to do what she thinks is best regardless of what others may have to say.
