I said it a few times in previous posts about Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman“, Anna Paquin felt underutilized. She had a prominent role it seemed, playing Peggy Sheeran, Robert DeNiro’s character’s daughter.
Throughout the three and a half-hour film, Paquin’s character Peggy has a total of six words and instead ignores her father basically throughout the entirety of the film. Peggy has felt her father was up to no good, a hitman for the Bufalino crime family, after seeing him beat a man in front of her for allegedly shoving her at the local grocery store.
It seemed like a veteran actress like Anna Paquin would be up for more involvement in the film, and in several assumptions that she was ordered to do it and had confrontations with director Martin Scorsese, she came out to set the line straight in a tweet on November 10th last month.
Anna Paquin’s Tweet
Nope, nobody was doing any “ordering”. I auditioned for the privilege of joining the incredible cast of .@TheIrishmanFilm and I’m incredibly proud to get to be a part of this film. https://t.co/yx54jE4ugy

Robert DeNiro on USA Today
Following this account and Anna Paquin standing up for herself, Robert DeNiro has also defended her. In an interview with USA Today, DeNiro went on to say,
“She was very powerful and that’s what it was,” DeNiro told USA Today. “Maybe in other scenes, there could’ve been some interaction between Frank and her possibly, but that’s how it was done. She’s terrific and it resonates.”
Not only has DeNiro come to her defense, talented actress Anna Paquin has said herself, “…nobody was doing any “ordering”. I auditioned for the privilege…”
Hopefully, we can put a rest to all of the here say from people who were likely not even involved in the production of the enormous film, or in her decision to accept the role.
I’m glad to have figured out the story myself and am glad for Paquin to defend herself as that and thanks go to DeNiro for coming out and defending her as well. Over the last month, we’ve heard too many stories that are not true.
