We’re all caught up on The Mandalorian! Three chapters down before the release of number four. Did you see the torture droid from Star Wars IV: A New Hope that was in Princess Leia’s cell! Oh-my! A lot has happened in our latest episode. Returning baby Yoda for his Beskar reward, taking out the stormtroopers and picking a fight with Carl Weathers and every other bounty hunter in the town!
Jon Favreau continues to shine as writer and creator of The Mandalorian, giving viewers what they want. To escape into the world of Star Wars, a world that feels like it came from the 70s and 80s. Using animatronics for baby Yoda not only feeds into this but makes it look great. It’s a nice departure from the usual CGI.
Let’s discuss what we saw in chapter three as we gear up for chapter four!
Full Armor Set
The Mandalorian reluctantly returns baby Yoda to the group of the Empire for his reward. A crate packed full of Beskar ingots, and as we soon find out, it’s enough for a complete set of armor. If this were an RPG game, he would definitely get +1000 health, 5000 durability and a butt-kicking aura.
He takes it back to the hidden Mandalorian base to be smelted down, and in the process, we learn a little more about his past, their code and how they only go out one at a time.
In some flashbacks, we see more of the scene from the previous episodes and presumably watch his parents killed from a bomb as he is shielded by them in a shelter. The doors are opened to a terrifying droid armed to the droid teeth? We will find out more about this as we go and the secrets behind their helmet.
In the midst of getting his new armor, he is confronted by the rest of the clan of Mandalorian’s, which one starts an altercation with him and explains why they only go out one at a time, to conceal their small numbers. Plus, we get to see some more vibro-blade action, which is always neat!
Going Back For Baby Yoda
My favorite scene of the episode comes from The Mandalorian rescuing baby Yoda from the Empire. His use of distractions and killing them covertly was exciting to watch, and some of the shots made it feel like a horror film for the stormtroopers who had to investigate the darkness.
It was excellently shot and choreographed and we got to see another full display of The Mandalorian’s expert skill set.
Star Wars: John Wick
Seemingly everyone in the town is a bounty hunter. I felt like I was watching John Wick: Chapter 3, where everyone in New York and around the world is a hitman!
The Mandalorian exits with baby Yoda to escape to his ship, he is confronted and overrun by Carl Weathers’ Greef Karga. What follows is an epic shoot out between The Mandalorian and the other twenty-some bounty hunters.
This is where I expected baby Yoda to help once again. To use the force and create some sort of shield for them to escape, or send out a force shock wave to knock out some enemies. However, I think I like what we got instead.
Instead, we see the Mandalorian Clan hover over the rooftops and unload all their firepower. We see several different weapon types and Mandalorians, including the one who we got into an argument with earlier in the episode. This allows us to escape away with baby Yoda to our ship.
Heart of Beskar
This is always a sort of fun character moment in films and television. As The Mandalorian enters his ship, we find Karga waiting for him to board and catches him from behind, demanding him to leave the child. Of course, we can’t do that! After causing a distraction, The Mandalorian shoots Karga who falls out of the ship from the force of the impact only to realize that the blaster had hit him in his Beskar ingots he had also received from the bounty. Probably a sort of “founders fee”.
It’s always fun to speculate, did The Mandalorian do this on purpose? He knew the Beskar was there, and he didn’t want to kill the guy. Or was it just Karga’s lucky day?
I think for the overall story and the compassion The Mandalorian has shown up to now, it’s pretty obvious that he cared about Karga to some extent that he didn’t want to kill the guy. So this was a bit of a warning shot and a way to get him off the ship.
Plus, it’s Carl Weathers! You’ve got Carl Weathers in your show, you use Carl Weathers.

- One of Greef Karga’s hired men is a Zabrak, the same species as Darth Maul. This is the first alien species from the prequel trilogy to appear in this series.
