It’s been going on for a while now. The Telemundo vs Univision competition has been long-standing and also ever-changing. At one point, we were #TeamTelemundo and we’ll get into why. However, in recent years it seems Univision has finally straightened out their issues. Here’s what you need to know.

Telemundo vs Univision: How it started

So, we only started watching Telenovelas regularly with Sin Senos Sí Hay Paraíso in 2016. However, we got introduced to the genre in 2013 with Maria Mercedes. Eventually, we became familiar enough with Spanish to be able to watch Univision shows, who don’t usually have CC3 captioning.

But while we did enjoy both networks, we felt Univision was becoming problematic. It started with really awkward slice and dice jobs on the content they aired. Cuts that make it not only clear something’s missing, but made everything else around it make no sense. So, it was hard at times to get into what they were airing.

Telemundo vs. Univision: Why Telemundo is losing badly

Meanwhile, Telemundo had some great stuff with Paraíso as well as season 2 of La Reina del Sur, which was so good, it was a massive hit and even beat the English content in the same timeslot. Their stories were fun, and they had some great characters in their shows.

For example, Altagracia Sandoval (Aracely Arámbula) of La Doña was one of the most complex characters we’ve seen on there and their season 1 finale was a lesson in a perfect ending. There was one problem, though…

Telemundo vs Univision: How it’s going

See, Telemundo did some good things with the second season of La Doña. We loved so many aspects of it, but it definitely fell off toward the end. The finale was pretty bad, in our opinion, and left us both wishing for a better resolution to the world, but sure it’ll just be messed up more.

Then there was the Paraíso franchise. The network had promised when they changed the name to El Final del Paraíso that it wasn’t the end of the show. It was just opening up a new chapter. As we got closer to the end of the season, it was suddenly ending.

And they gave a terrible power point ending you’d have to have seen to believed. It was that terrible. And, oddly enough, failed to give any information about what became of the protagonist who started the reboot in 2016, or her missing man, whose romance actually set off the events of the series.

They also recently have been yanking shows pretty quickly and replacing them with things that don’t do much better. In fact, they recently were airing a Turkish novela to replace one of their comedies, which was moved to an afternoon timeslot.

Recently they took off at least one episode of the Turkish novela to air a three-hour episode of a reality competition. And they still haven’t given any solid info on La Reina del Sur 3, even after having a trailer out about a year ago. It’s making them look unfocused and disrespectful of their fans. And there’s a pretty lengthy list of other shows they suddenly pulled or ended terribly.

    Telemundo vs Univision: Winning

So, who is winning the Telemundo vs. Univision battle? In our eyes, and in the eyes of viewers, it’s Univision. They’re consistently beating Telemundo’s offerings. And a lot of the time, it’s by a significant amount. In fact, we don’t think Univision has lost a time slot in at least a couple of years. Here’s why we think the tide turned.

For one, they stopped slicing and dicing. At least, to a noticeable level. Their stories and characters are more engaging and they have yet to do a finale we didn’t like. It’s also been a while since they suddenly pulled a show off the air, giving fans a chance to really get into the characters and stories.

If Telemundo wants to get back in the game, they need to put more effort into their finales as well as be a bit more patient with their offerings. Or at least have something much better to replace them with. Because we have to say, Pasíon de Gavilanes. Because that one lost us pretty quickly. The characters were hard to root for, and we felt like the sudden shift in the twins from obviously guilty murderers to kind people was not believable in the least.
