And the jury is out. There’s a new report that says the jury in Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation case against Amber Heard has found both the actor and his ex-wife guilty. In a move that has surprised many people, the jury has found both actors liable for defamation in their lawsuits against each other.

According to new reports, the seven-member jury in Virginia awarded Mr Depp $15 million in damages after finding that a 2018 Washington Post article penned by Heard on the “sexual violence” she had suffered was defamatory to Depp.

However, the jury also found that Ms Heard was defamed by statements made by Mr Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman, who told the Daily Mail that her abuse claims were a “hoax” and awarded her $2 million in damages.

Depp sued the Aquaman star for $50 million over the piece, titled: “I spoke up against sexual violence – and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” While the article did not mention the actor by name, his lawyers said it falsely implied he physically and sexually abused Heard while they were together. Heard countersued for $100m over the Daily Mail article.

During the trial, Heard testified about more than a dozen episodes of physical and sexual assault that she said Depp inflicted on her. Depp has denied ever hurting Heard and pointed to several instances of her abusing him.

Depp’s statement after the ruling read: “From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.”

However, Heard condemned the verdict, saying it “sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.”
