Apparently so as Johnny Depp’s defamation suit against Amber Heard isn’t over yet. On Monday, jurors heard the recordings as Depp continued to give evidence in the defamation trial, taking place in Fairfax County, Virginia, which is now in its fourth week. Here’s what you need to know.
As many fans know by now, Depp filed the defamation suit against Heard over a column she wrote for the Washington Post in December 2018 in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” However, Heard never named Depp, whom she met in 2009 on the set of the film The Rum Diary, but he sued her for implying he was a domestic abuser and is seeking $50 million in damages.

Heard has countersued, asking for $100 million and claiming she suffered “rampant physical violence and abuse” at his hands.
While the libel lawsuit is supposed to center on whether Depp was defamed in the article, most of the trial has focused on ugly details of the couple’s brief marriage. Heard’s lawyers continued to focused on Depp’s drinking, drug use and charged interactions with Heard during their relationship.
Depp has denied all allegations that he has ever assaulted Heard. Her lawyers argue that Depp physically and sexually abused her and that his denials lack merit because he was often drunk and high to the point of blacking out.
Both Heard and Depp, who met in 2009 and were married from 2015-2016, accuse the other of acts of physical violence during their relationship. They have both denied the other’s claims. Depp denied ever striking Heard and argued that she was the aggressor in their relationship. The jury is simultaneously considering a defamation countersuit by Heard against Depp.
The trial, which started on April 11, is expected to last six weeks. Heard has not yet testified.
