Talk Show host Trevor Noah has given a light-hearted take on Will Smith’s punishment in the aftermath of his slapgate scandal at the Oscars involving Chris Rock.

Will, for his part, received mass condemnation online after he slapped the comedian following his joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss.  Although Chris refused to file charges against the actor, the very fact of the matter is that Will did not go unpunished.

He was subsequently banned from the Oscars for a period of 10 years. And yet, Trevor was of the view that the punishment was not enough. In his comments, he said: “I got into the details and I realized he gets to keep his Oscar and he can still win Oscars even though he’s banned.

“This is a favor! Will Smith doesn’t have to go to the ceremony! Yeah, he doesn’t have to get dressed up.” Although Trevor does have a point, it is important to bear in mind the following factors.

First of all, the prospects of Will ever winning another Oscar are extremely unlikely. After all, which major director would be willing to take a risk and grant him a lead role in a big movie.

Secondly, seeing Will win another Oscar will not go down very well with the public and therefore this is unlikely to materialise. But on a much more comedic level, Trevor felt that Chris should have been consulted on Will’s punishment, so he could avoid crossing paths with the actor again.

Trevor added: “I … think [the Academy] should’ve at least consulted Chris Rock before choosing the punishment. Because if Will were still going to the Oscars, that’s at least four hours where Chris Rock knows where he is.”

One thing that has become abundantly clear is that comedians are having to now second-guess themselves with their material. And in a profession where artists should be allowed to express themselves, that cannot be a good thing. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this?
