The tour was, by all accounts, a PR disaster as a result of the reaction the couple had received. Their visit to Jamaica was characterised by protests across the country because of the Royal family’s role in the slave trade.
Not only that, but similar sentiments also followed in The Bahamas. While William did apologise for the role of the Royal family, the very fact of the matter is that it was seen in poor taste. And that has left the couple with something to think about.
A source said: “It was certainly more challenging than expected given the protests. They obviously know the history, but being there during the protests was a real eye-opener.” And this was demonstrated none more so than through their plans for Belize.
The pair were reportedly forced to cancel their first trip there to visit the Indian Creek. This was on the grounds that the indigenous population had stressed their dissatisfaction with the couple.
So much so that things began to get very hostile indeed. Sebastian Shol, who happens to be the chairman for the Indian Creek, had this to say: “We don’t want them to land on our land, that’s the message that we want to send. They could land anywhere but not on our land.”
This has left the couple in a very difficult position. With Queen Elizabeth’s declining health, coupled with the fact that she is not getting any younger, the onus has naturally fallen on William and Kate.
But as the pair are not very popular at the moment, there are serious question marks over the legitimacy of the monarchy going forward. After all, if other parts of the world decide to adopt a similar policy towards the Royal family, then there is the obvious question of how long can they continue to function.
William and Kate will have to consider their state visits very carefully going forward. This tour was undoubtedly a disaster and perhaps the Caribbean is a part of the world that they should avoid. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this?
