‘Cheer’ was a huge hit for the streaming platform, Netflix as the couch-bound moved on from the ridiculousness of Tiger King to watching elite athletes perform on the champion Navarro Cheer Squad.

Despite the popularity of the six-part docuseries, a second season was never announced.

Now, in a huge but welcome surprise, Netflix has not only announced that season 2 of Cheer will premiere on January 12, but it has also dropped a trailer to whet fans’ appetites.

The second season of Cheer actually began secretly filming in January 2020, just as the first season appeared on the streaming service. Production was shut down only two months later because of the pandemic, which is when the show really started to gain popularity.

Filming resumed again in September 2020 but that year’s NCAA National Championship (usually held in Daytona in March) had been canceled.

While the new season will again focus on coach Monica Aldama and the members of her team, fierce rivals, Trinity Valley Community College will also have cameras following them on their “David and Goliath” journey against the elite Navarro squad on their quest to take the title at the 2021 NCAA competition.

Several new faces will join the cast for the second season, but there will be returnees, also.

Stars were made following the huge success of season one, like coach Aldama who went on to compete on Dancing With the Stars, and athletes Lexi Brumback, La’Darius Marshall, Morgan Simianer, and especially Jerry Harris.

However, after reaching the lofty heights of stardom, Harris came crashing down when he was arrested by the FBI. Jerry faces up to 15 years in prison after multiple (horrific) felony charges have been pressed against him including sexual exploitation of children, transportation with the intent for illicit sexual conduct, and production of child pornography.

The previews show that Harris’ arrest will be a part of the season as the event unfolded while crews were filming Harris and his teammates. According to director Greg Whiteley, the charges against the season one fan-favorite are covered in depth in episode five.

Whiteley says he currently has no communication with Harris as the lawyers will not allow it, however, two of the accusers, brothers who’ve alleged they were 13 when Harris first began communicating sexually with them, will feature in the docuseries.

The 9-episode second season of Cheer debuts on January 12.
