This could be the funniest thing Stephen Colbert has ever said. I half-joke as I think Colbert used to be incredibly funny. However, what he said about Kyle Rittenhouse may have been the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. During a monologue for his show, Colbert expressed his disappointment in the verdict of the Rittenhouse trial.
When he announced that Rittenhouse was found innocent, the crowd booed. He addressed the matter by saying,
“The big news on Friday was that after being accused of crossing state lines, killing two people and wounding another last year during a Black Lives Matter protest, Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted on all counts.“
Okay, well, I’ll agree with that. Protest was a loose definition of what was going on, but I’m with you so far. However, it’s right after this that he suggest we need to ‘change the law’ since Rittenhouse was found not guilty.

Colbert continued,
“Cards on the table, I am not a legal expert so I can’t tell you whether or not Kyle Rittenhouse broke the law. But I can tell you this, if he didn’t break the law we should change the law.“
This is a dangerous phrase and a slippery slope to go down. Changing the law because you didn’t like the outcome? Colbert clearly didn’t watch the trial (or he did and that’s why he’s being very careful about his words), because a jury found Rittenhouse not guilty based on several videos that were taken that night, as well as evidence and testimony we didn’t know before the trial. They had more information and heard far more than we did, yet people are still quick to jump on Rittenhouse, regardless of whether they watched the trial or not.
This goes for censorship as well. While you may be on the side that is promoting it now, that pendulum can swing violently back at you. The moment we start changing laws or censoring people you don’t agree with, it is the moment our country is done for.
Emotions and personal opinions need to be kept out of the law. The law is there for everyone, regardless of which side of the imaginary line you side with.
While I understand Colbert is a ‘comedian’ and I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, this is just playing to his crowd and continuing to sow division.
