Comedian Gilbert Gottfried recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast and was an absolute delight to listen to. Hearing his stories and his humbleness was incredible. However, one of the most interesting stories was how much he disliked ‘Saturday Night Live’.

Gottfried goes into detail the few times he was on the show and when he wasn’t, he didn’t think anything of it. It wasn’t a big deal at the time. When he was on the show, he explained that the original cast had just left and now an entire new alumni were moved in. He compared it to the sitcom ‘Friends’ and how if they changed the cast after a few seasons people would lose their minds.

Gottfried also explains the process of pitching sketches and how people were pitted against each other to get their stuff on, and wouldn’t laugh at other people’s stuff. He explains that the writers would get so mad with him that one of their sketches involved a funeral, and they made Gottfried play the body inside the casket. Now, he couldn’t do anything but lay there like a dead body.

Rogan weighs in from hearing experiences similar to Gottfriends from Jim Breuer and Phil Hartmann. They told Joe that the structure behind the scenes was garbage and it was more political with it’s hierarchy than actual comedy. It didn’t really matter if you were funny, what mattered was if you knew the right people and touched the right buttons.

This sounds completely opposite from the original cast who genuinely seemed to backing each other up and putting on the best show they could.

The entire podcast is very interesting and Gottfried is a great guest, so I would highly recommend watching the full thing on Spotify. There are a ton of stories that Gottfried tells including getting complimented by George Carlin!

What do you think? Are you a fan of Gottfried and have you listened to the entire podcast yet? Let us know in the comments below.
