The latest Superman comic by DC Comics will showcase the superhero’s son Jon Kent as bisexual, but the fans have responded by lashing out at the illustrators for going ahead with this move.
Outraged Fans Target DC Comics Superman Illustrators Following Their Decision To Showcase The Superhero As Bisexual
The decision to portray Superman in this manner has divided the fanbase on a global scale. Although some felt that this move was seen as a progressive one in recognising the LGBTQ community, others felt that it was anything but that.
The latter camp was aggrieved by what they felt to be a case of populism gone wrong. Therefore, by pandering to what was popular, the whole Superman franchise was taken over and lost its spirit.
As a consequence, fans have become very intimidating. A source told TMZ the following: “LAPD officers were recently dispatched to patrol the homes of some of the illustrators/production staffers who created the latest iteration of Superman.
“The extra protection comes after the major backlash that included some so-called fans making threats.” It is not clear how many people were behind this incident, but it does show that the superhero franchise could be under threat.
After all, if this move has gone ahead within the comic book genre, then there is no reason why it will not transpire at some point on the movie screen. Naturally, that is only going to alienate fans even further.
Luckily for the illustrators, though, there was no physical violence. The source added: “We’re told the pissed-off comic book readers inundated the studios to voice their displeasure with the character’s newly-announced sexuality.”
In response, the authorities have warned the surrounding neighbourhoods to be on alert in case this were to happen again. Clearly, there is a lot of pressure on the illustrators.
But as of now, it is very unlikely that the whole Superman team will back down from their position. If they were to go back on it, they could end up antagonising the whole LGBTQ community.
With that in mind, there is still a police presence. The source continued: “Cops still patrolled out of an abundance of caution — and that the situation has since settled down.”
