Before they left for their cross-country trip, Gabby Petito’s parents say they assumed her fiance Brian Laundrie was a decent person that would simply take good care of her while she was so far away from home.
During an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, the Petito family said that Brian was always “quiet and polite” although he has now become the number one suspect in the disappearance and death of the 22-year-old woman. Here’s what you need to know.
Gabby Petito’s Parents Assumed Brian Laundrie Was A Great Fiance Who Would ‘Take Care Of Her’
Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, told 60 Minutes Australia that Brian “just seemed like a nice guy,” adding, “I worried. I told her to be careful, be safe. To be aware of your surroundings. Don’t trust anybody.”
“But I felt safe because she was with Brian and I felt like she would be OK,” she said. “I thought he would take care of her.” Gabby and Brian began their trip across the country on July 2 and blogged about it on Instagram.
“She did look happy,” the young woman’s father, Joe Petito, said. “But as we look more and more into this, it might not have been as great as people online perceived.”
However, Brian returned home to Florida on September 1st and without his girlfriend. He quickly got a lawyer and refused to speak to investigators after it was reported that Gabby had gone missing.
Brian is the sole person of interest in the death of his fiance, Gabby Petito. He has been missing since mid-September, but his parents say that he might have went into a nature reserve in Sarasota County, Florida.
Gabby’s body was found on September 19 in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. The coroner said DNA samples were taken by law enforcement.
“My very last sentence was I love you. And her last sentence to me was ‘I love you too’,” Joe said, to which her step-dad, Jim Schmidt, added, “Gabby was 22-years-old. Her life was stolen from her… stolen from us.”
