Broadway is back, baby. But, it might not be the same was as you remember it before. Broadway has announced both vaccine and mask mandates before all 41 theaters are expected to open. The Great White Way was forced to turn off the lights in March of 2020 because of the ongoing pandemic that has been Covid-19. Here’s what you need to know.
According to reports, Broadway will require guests to be vaccinated and wear a mask, in a statement that was released by the Broadway League. The new policy is expected to stay in place through at least October.
Here’s What You Need To Know About Broadway’s Reopening
“As vaccination has proven the most effective way to stay healthy and reduce transmission, I’m pleased that the theatre owners have decided to implement these collective safeguards at all our Broadway houses,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, said in a statement. “A uniform policy across all New York City Broadway theatres makes it simple for our audiences and should give even more confidence to our guests about how seriously Broadway is taking audience safety.”
That’s because Covid-19 cases – or at least the Delta variant – are rising once more across the country, with some restrictions, including mask wearing, brought back in to curb the growth in infections. “Get vaccinated, and we’ll see you in the fall (autumn),” tweeted Broadway and TV star Jeremy Jordan.
Composer Jason Robert Brown also agreed with the move: “That’s right. That’s where we’re at.”
Company members who are not vaccinated, including those under the age of 12, must continue to wear masks, practice physical distancing when possible and undergo testing at least twice a week. Right now, Bruce Springsteen’s one-man show is the only performance currently running on Broadway.
It’s been noted that for performances in November 2021 and beyond, the theatre operators will review their policies.
