Teen Mom 2 star Leah Messer has shared how her daughter, Ali, may just be helping medical professionals and student find a cure for muscular dystrophy.

At 16, Leah discovered she was pregnant. Soon she and her then boyfriend (now ex-husband), Corey Simms discovered they would be the parents of twins! But the third surprise was far more heart wrenching.

One of the twins, Aliannah (always referred to as Ali) was not progressing the same way as her sister, Aleeha (referred to as Gracie). Ali was unable to stand or hold her weight up like Aleeha could.

Leah, Corey, and–thanks to MTV’s cameras–the fans of Teen Mom soon learned Ali had muscular dystrophy. In fact, it was a rare form of the disease called Titin’s muscular dystrophy.

Now, a biopsy taken from Ali seven years ago has been sent to a lab at Ohio State University as part of trials on a new gene therapy testing.

“If her biopsy responds positively, it could potentially unlock doors for many others,” Leah explained on her social media over the Memorial Day weekend.

Since Ali’s diagnosis, Leah has become an advocate for finding a cure for the disease and has partnered with the nonprofit organization, Cure Rare Disease. The organization raises money to be used in the research for cures of rare neuromuscular diseases, like Ali’s.

Now 11, Ali still has a hard time keeping up with Aleeah, often having to use a wheel chair to get around as her muscles tire very quickly. However, the tween is a positive bright light that Leah couldn’t be prouder of.

“I have three very strong-willed, three very strong, powerful women that will build empires and do amazing things,” Leah gushed of her twins and younger daughter, Adalynn. “But that girl, Ali, her determination, it’s so inspiring.”

Here’s hoping the new research will lead to positive new treatments for this and other diseases in the near future!
