When the (not so shocking) news broke that The Ellen DeGeneres Show was coming to an end, the first question that came to many daytime fans’ minds was who would earn themselves the coveted time slot DeGeneres has domineered for 18 years so far.

Now we know that Kelly Clarkson is set to take over.

NBC made the announcement that Clarkson’s afternoon talk show, currently in its sophomore season will replace the empty Ellen slot.

“By 2022, The Kelly Clarkson Show will be the star of our daytime entertainment schedules and an asset to our early afternoon newscasts,” stated Valari Staab, president of NBCUniversal Local.

In fact, The Kelly Clarkson show was planned to be the successor to Ellen at its inception in 2019. NBC had a hunch that Ellen had one foot out the door, even back then and Clarkson’s show, which debuted to huge ratings, seemed to be the perfect successor.

NBC had to give pause, however, when The Kelly Clarkson Show’s ratings dipped drastically during the pandemic. This was a trend for most shows live audience shows, all scrambling to put out content with a lot of misses and few hits when regular filming formats were made impossible.

Rumors of uncertainty on NBC’s behalf– that Kelly couldn’t pull the coveted hour off, and the network would go with a new face and name like Tiffany Haddish– were squashed when they crowned Kelly this week.

The Kelly Clarkson show has been renewed for two further seasons, through 2023 however, it sees NBC has higher hopes than getting just two more years out of Kelly.

Describing the show as one that resonates with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds, the network has promised they are already “working on some big plans for season 3 and are looking forward to becoming the premier show in daytime for years to come.”

Now Kelly just has to keep her nose clean and she may dominate day time for decades!
