Cher can’t turn back time, but she would like to see Britney Spears have a little more control over her life. The legendary singer has called on Britney’s father Jamie Spears to step down from his role in the singer’s conservatorship.

He used to oversee both his daughter’s financial and personal affairs, before stepping down from the latter role for health reasons. However, he still manages the singer’s estate, despite her telling a judge she wants him removed. Here’s what you need to know.

Cher says that while she didn’t see Framing Britney Spears, she does believe that it’s about time Britney Spears took care of her own finances. The FX/New York Times doc covered Britney’s rise to fame, along with her controversial conservatorship battle over her estate with her father.

In recent years, Britney’s fans have begun a ‘Free Britney’ movement in the hopes that the pop star can finally gain access to her own life. That, and they also want to see her ultimately make her own decisions without Jamie Spears in the way.

Speaking to the PA news agency, Cher said: “I think her father should move over and let her have her life. I believe she’s been paying long enough.”

Cher added the topic had long been discussed in Las Vegas, where Spears had performed a residency from 2013-2017.

Cher, star of new documentary Cher & The Loneliest Elephant, added: “It’s not like everybody on the strip in Las Vegas hasn’t been talking about this for a long time.”

Just recently, Britney took to her own Instagram account to address the matter.

“My life has always been very speculated …,” Britney wrote in the Instagram post. “Watched … and judged really my whole life !!! I have been exposed my whole life performing in front of people,” she posted. It takes a lot of strength to TRUST the universe with your real vulnerability cause I’ve always been so judged… insulted… and embarrassed by the media… and I still am till this day.”
