Royal author Robert Hardman reveals what happened during the final days of Queen Elizabeth. His book, “Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story,” tells the story.
Queen Elizabeth Died Peacefully in Her Sleep
Hardman interviewed the Queen’s private secretary regarding her final moments. Sir Edward Young was at Balmoral when she passed.
“Very peaceful. In her sleep. Slipped away. Old age. She wouldn’t have been aware of anything. No pain,”
the memo that is now part of the Royal Archives had not been seen before.
On September 7th, the day before she died, she spent the day resting in bed, but she planned to take part in a Privy Council Meeting, which was canceled at the last minute.
The Queen was steadfast and unwavering in her belief, “Never complain, never explain.” She worked right up until the end. Elizabeth did all her work without an utterance of grief.
She knew she would not live as long as her mother, the Queen Mary, had, but she was determined to see things through.
On September 7th, Charles and Princess Anne’s private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, urged the two to go to Balmoral to say their final goodbyes.
However, the Queen remained stable. The thought was that it would only be a day or two. Charles and Camilla spent an hour with her “privately at her bedside.”
Prince Charles then told Prince William and Prince Harry to come to Balmoral to spend time with her before she passed. Charles believed that the Queen had a few days left, not merely hours. Prince Harry was already in London with his wife, Meghan Markle, for charity work.
Charles asked Harry not to bring Meghan with him to Balmoral. William’s wife, Kate Middleton, was not there, either. But Kate “had not been asked to stay away.”
The Queen Was An Unforgettable Historical Public Figure
William, who has a perpetual temper, was still angry at Harry for his Oprah interview with Meghan. In Harry’s book, “Spare,” he claimed that he texted his brother inquiring about his travel arrangements, but William chose not to respond.
William didn’t see that precise moment as the appropriate time to hash things out with his brother. “Spare” had not yet been published, but the royal family braced themselves.
Charles found out about the Queen’s imminent death when Princess Anne called him, instructing him to come right away.
He was on his way with Camilla when Charles’s brother, Prince Edward, called to inform him that their mother had passed. He had just arrived at the estate and was addressed as “Your Majesty.”
Those two words were all he needed to hear to know that his mother had just died. Charles and Camilla went to the Queen’s bedside to bid her farewell.
Harry did not make it in time to say goodbye. Charles said he tried to get a hold of Harry, but he was on an airplane. The Duke of Sussex had dinner alone that night, as Charles was with Camilla and William.
The Queen was an unforgettable historical public figure. It wasn’t just England that mourned Queen Elizabeth. Many people in many nations mourned her, as she represented a constant light and icon in a world filled with uncertainty and constantly evolving.
