Information obtained through emails demonstrated that Dua Lipa’s dad, Dukagjin Lipa, who has a communications agency and is a representative of his daughter, communicated with World Cup authorities and proposed whether he could help coordinate the tournament’s inaugural event.
Dua Lipa’s Dad Allegedly Attempted To Get His Daughter To Perform At The Qatari World Cup Behind Her Back
In 2020, the 53-year-old communicated that he was not offering to put up Dua for a performance. Instead, he discussed his ties to other well-known musicians, such as Calvin Harris and Miley Cyrus.
This was then followed up by another email in 2021, where Dukagjin requested if he could “be of help,” to which a member of the committee replied: “It is fantastic to hear from you and know that with Dua being put forward it is backed by the knowledge that she is also interested.”
Afterwards, Dua Lipa stated that she would decline the invitation to perform at the inauguration, due to Qatar’s human rights situation. She does have a massive global fan base, which is why she had to make sure that this was borne in mind when making the appropriate decisions.
As a result, she told her 87 million followers on Instagram quite clearly that she had no intention of performing. Her following comments confirmed as much: “There is currently a lot of speculation that I will be performing at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar. I will not be performing.”
Simultaneously, Mr Lipa revealed that she was not conscious of his involvement with the coordinators. With that being, Dukagjin made that point very clear:
“In 2020 I had several email exchanges with the Qatari World Cup marketing team in my personal capacity as a festival organiser. Dua was not involved or aware of those exchanges or any other conversations.
“When I introduced myself, I gave them my full background which included my representation of Dua. But I clarified that I was not speaking to them with her in mind and made that very clear when they asked me whether my enquiries were about Dua.
“This was in early 2021, at a time when Qatar had made several pledges (since winning the World Cup contract) to reform their labour laws and make amends to their human rights record. As the conversation went on and the World Cup got closer, it became very clear that these pledges were not going to be honoured so I stopped talking to them.
“Since then I have been approached by several people connected with the Qatar World Cup to who I made very clear that Dua would NOT be involved with them.”
Dua and Dukagjin made her stances very clear, which should be applauded regardless of what you think about the way the Qatari government operates. And that is a lesson for other artists.
