According to the NATO military alliance is “looking into” unconfirmed reports that Russian missiles may have struck eastern Poland, killing two people, and is working closely with the Polish government, an official said. Here’s what you need to know.
Two people have died in an explosion in Przewodow, a village in eastern Poland near the border with Ukraine, firefighters said. “We are looking into these reports and closely coordinating with our ally Poland,” a NATO official said, on condition of anonymity.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has called an urgent meeting of a government committee for national security and defense affairs, the government spokesman said on Twitter. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also convened a defense council meeting after the reports, while Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins has called an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning.
Russia’s defense ministry has denied reports that Russian missiles had hit Polish territory, describing them as a “deliberate provocation.”
It added in a statement: “No strikes on targets near the Ukrainian-Polish state border were made by Russian means of destruction.”
President Joe Biden spoke to his Polish counterpart by phone on Tuesday evening from Bali where world leaders are currently gathered for the G20 summit in Bali. Biden offered “full US support for and assistance with Poland’s investigation” according to a White House readout on the president’s call with Andrzej Duda.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the UK was “urgently looking into reports of a missile strike in Poland” and said the country would “support our allies as they establish what has happened.”
Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the apparent Russian missiles striking a site in Poland “a very significant escalation” of the war. Among the theories being investigated is that one or more of the missiles were brought down by an air defense system, and landed just across the Polish border.
Russia had unleashed one of its biggest bombardments yet across Ukraine – 85 missiles according to President Zelenskyy. The Pentagon said it was aware of the reports but did not have any information to corroborate the reports.
