Tech enthusiasts are declaring victory against child sexual abuse material by praising Elon Musk’s success in combating it on Twitter.
Elon Musk Supporters Praise Him For Tackling Child Sexual Abuse Material On Twitter But Not Everyone Is Convinced-‘You Absolute Fool, Did You FIRE EVERYONE WHO WORKED ON KEEPING THIS OFF THE PLATFORM?’
According to the NCMEC, 29.3 million photographs of child abuse were removed from the internet just last year. So in an attempt to combat this problem, it appears that Twitter has been getting its act together to do something about it by banning some hashtags.
One such Twitter user remarked the following: “Twitter is reportedly nuking pedo accounts. This is eliminating much of Antifa Twitter.” Nevertheless, this is more complicated than first thought.
When certain offensive hashtags are banned, users simply switch to an alternative one to continue their conversations. And before Musk’s acquisition of the platform, company products were allegedly shown alongside child exploitation images.
With that being said, Musk looks to have banned hashtags associated with those looking too share child sexual exploitation. Jess Maddox, who happens to be an assistant professor at the University of Alabama, has questioned this move: “The problem is much more complicated than just a few hashtags.
“For Musk’s supporters, who have always steadfastly believed he can do no wrong, touting and sharing this maneuver is evidence of his success. And this is the problem. Instead of focusing on victims, the conversation shifts to Musk’s savior narrative instead.”
The response on social media was mixed. A certain subset of people welcomed this move since it has been a long-standing issue. Meanwhile, others bashed Elon on the basis that he had fired a significant number of Twitter employees.
And in the process, some suggested that those people had been working on tackling such issues as the firing did impact those who worked within the human rights teams. One person wrote: “You absolute fool.
“Did you FIRE EVERYONE WHO WORKED ON KEEPING THIS OFF THE PLATFORM AND NOTIFYING LAW ENFORCEMENT AND @MissingKids? Do you know hundreds of people worked on these issues?”
