Chris Rock Will Be The First Comedian To Perform Live On Netflix

Well, well, well. Netflix has said that comedian Chris Rock will be the first artist to perform live on the streaming platform. Netflix plans to roll out more livestreaming options soon, starting with unscripted series and stand-up specials. Here’s what you need to know.

Rock’s live performance is the first one that the entertainment service has unveiled. This will be Rock’s second Netflix stand-up special following ‘Chris Rock: Tamborine’ in 2018.

The Emmy Award-winning comedian also appeared in the ‘Netflix Is a Joke’ comedy festival in early 2022 with Dave Chappelle. The live-streamed comedy special will air in 2023. Rock, who was famously smacked in the face by actor Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, has said he will discuss his reaction to the incident in the live Netflix set.

The streaming platform said it will give more details about the live Rock event later. “Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” said Robbie Praw, Netflix vice president of stand-up and comedy formats. “We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch.”

Earlier in the year, it was reported that Chris Rock stopped Will Smith from getting arrested at the Oscars. Rock stopped the police from arresting Will Smith at the Oscars, despite the fact that the actor slapped him across the face in front of the entire audience that night.

Following the dramatic incident, Oscars show-runner Will Packer has said the police were “prepared” to arrest the King Richard star. In an interview with ABC, Packer said the comedian had been “very dismissive” of the options given to him by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) when officers went to his office to speak with Mr Rock, who was told the incident was classed as “battery.”

The moment Smith began yelling obscenities from the audience before he walked on stage to confront Rock, Packer realized it was real. “Once I saw Will yelling at the stage with such vitriol, my heart dropped,” Packer told Good Morning America. “And I just remember thinking, ‘Oh no. Oh, no. Not like this.’ And Chris was keeping his head when everybody else was losing theirs.”
