The news of Chris Davidson’s death hit the world of professional surfing hard. He was only 45 years old and he died after he got into a fight outside of a bar just north of Sydney, Australia. The police responded when they were called to a bar fight just outside of Sportman’s Way pub in New South Wales. It was just after 11 p.m. on Saturday night.

Just as the police arrived, it seemed that Davidson was unconscious. The paramedics tried to treat him at the scene and then he was taken to Kempsey District Hospital. That is where he died.

On Sunday, there was a man arrested in South West Rocks, New South Wales and the police officially charged him with the assault that ended up causing the death of Davidson.

The world of professional surfing was saddened by this loss and Surfing Australia posted on their Facebook this past weekend, “Surfing Australia and the surfing community are mourning the loss of former WSL Championship Tour surfer, Chris Davidson, who passed away at Kempsey Hospital on Saturday evening. Davo was an incredibly talented surfer and true individual in our sport and community. Our thoughts go out to his two children, friends, and family at this time.”

Davidson became incredibly popular in the surfing world in the late 90s. In 996, he beat Kelly Slater as a 19-year-old in the Rip Curl Pro competition. This was shocking at the time since Slater was the world champion and a huge name in professional surfing. Slater took to social media to share his thoughts on Davidson’s death. He wrote, “Lost another soldier yesterday. Had many a good battle with this guy. One of the most natually talented surfers I ever knew.”

As far as his career goes, he competed in the World Surf League in 2010 and 2011 and did have a loss to Slater in 2010, but he did get third place in that competition. He was ranked 14th in the world in 2010, but he did have some struggles with consistency. Not only that, he did have a “string of drunk driving offenses” while he was still surfing professionally.

It is unclear right now what started the fight between the two men at the pub. Police are still investigating the fight and have not released any new details as of today. The man that was arrested will go back to court in November and hopefully we will learn more about what happened that night.
