British Royal News says that it’s official. Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96 after a historic 70-year reign. According to reports, her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday. Here’s what you need to know.

Queen Elizabeth died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after doctors said they had become concerned about her health on Thursday. In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Charles immediately became King upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor is also survived by her other children, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, and their spouses. Prince William, next in line to the throne, and Prince Harry are among her eight grandchildren. She has a dozen great-grandchildren.

Earlier in the day, the Daily Mail royal columnist Rebecca English wrote on Twitter, “To summarize, all of the Queen’s children – Charles, Anne, Edward, Andrew – are either at the Queen’s bedside or traveling to be with her. Her grandson, Prince William, is also in Scotland. This is as grave as it gets, I am so sorry to say.”

This came after Buckingham Palace shared an update that said, “Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable at Balmoral.”

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change. During her reign, 15 British prime ministers served in office and she met 13 American presidents — every United States leader during her time on the throne, apart from Lyndon B. Johnson. Elizabeth ruled over the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, and became one of the most recognizable women ever to have lived. Her son, Charles, immediately became King upon her death.

The White House has also reacted to the queen’s death. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reacted Thursday to the news that Queen Elizabeth II has died at 96, saying that “our hearts and our thoughts” go to the family and the people of the United Kingdom.

“Our hearts and our thoughts go to the family members of the Queen, goes to the people of United Kingdom. I don’t want to get ahead of what the President is going to say,” Jean-Pierre said at the end of the White House press briefing, reacting live to the news of the Queen’s passing.
