As close as Lydia Plath and Kim Plath have claimed to be in the past, it was clear when they had their conversation that there were things that Kim felt that she still had to spare Lydia from. When Kim was setting up to have this conversation, it felt like she was setting up to have a conversation with a much, much younger person than 18-year-old Lydia actually is.
Kim said she was nervous to have the conversation with Lydia, and it’s easy to see why considering just how deeply Lydia has drank the kool-aid when it comes to the Plaths’ conservative religious practices. Lydia wanted to be a listening ear to her mother, but felt like she couldn’t because she hadn’t been married for 24 years.

Kim wanted some validation from Lydia, but Lydia couldn’t give that at all. The only thing she could do was lean into the only “wisdom” that she had, and that was the holy spirit. We’re not saying that God can’t perform miracles, but what we are saying is that Kim’s right and that human relationships are often a lot more complicated than spiritual ones.
Lydia was a bit offended because she took it to mean that Kim thought that God’s love wasn’t enough for her, but that really wasn’t our takeaway from that, however, right now… Lydia doesn’t understand that what Kim wants is for someone who is willing to be intimate and real with her, and from the conversation, she was having with Lydia…
Lydia still seems to be a child at heart, she still has faith in her parents’ marriage that it will work out and still probably thinks that all her parents need to do is come together and pray about things and that that will make everything okay again.
But… that’s a very, very childlike and immature observation, it’s not that prayer doesn’t work it’s just faith without works is dead and if one person is not willing to put in the work to keep the marriage going when it needs to be both parties, then it’s clear that it’s going to end soon. Case in point, Kim and Barry’s marriage. We’ll say a prayer for Lydia’s sanity. Stay tuned!!!
