Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on Friday while campaigning for a candidate in the country’s national elections. A video surfaced on social media showing the moment Abe collapsed to the ground bleeding from gunshot wounds to his neck and chest. One of the bullets pierced his heart.
The 67-year-old was rushed to Nara Medical University Hospital where doctors tried to save his life but ultimately could not save him. Abe was pronounced dead just after 5 PM.
Police have allegedly arrested the gunman, Tetsuya Yamagami, who was charged with attempted murder before Abe was even pronounced dead. Police recovered a homemade gun that the suspect had used.
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Assassinated During Campaign Speech
Abe was campaigning in support of Sunday’s elections for Kei Sato, a current member of the Upper house running for re-election. He was less than a minute into his speech when he was shot.
Shockingly, Japan has one of the world’s lowest rates of gun crimes because of its strict laws. Japan reported just nine gun-related deaths in 2018.
Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister being elected to two terms from 2006 to 2007 and 2012-2020. He resigned in 2020 due to health issues.
President Donald Trump and President Barack Obama both had close relationships with Abe.
This is truly a shocking moment not just for Japan, but for the world. We wish Abe’s family and friends well during this difficult time.
Rest in peace Abe.
