Many believe that Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena Zelenska’s appearance on the Vogue cover has crossed the line into vanity territory given the ongoing conflict. The first family of Ukraine is highlighted in a digital edition of the magazine titled “Portrait of Bravery: Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska” with photography by Annie Leibovitz. The issue is all about Olena and her role in the conflict with Russia. It’s a comprehensive profile of both her and her husband, the Ukrainian President.
Of course, there are also a good number of pictures of each of them scattered throughout, including shots of Olena alone and pictures of them holding hands and/or posing in various locations in what appears to be Kyiv’s Mariinsky Palace.
President Volodymyr Zelensky And His Wife’s Appearance On Vogue Magazine Has “Crossed” The Line According To Critics
There are certainly many difficult topics covered in the narrative, and you have to assume that the goal is to raise awareness of the issue. However, the Zelenskys’ initial participation in this is drawing criticism, with some claiming that this comes across as tone-deaf.
Additionally, the general public is aware that they were photographed for Vogue by a well-known celebrity photographer. By far, AL has the best photographic record of famous people.
There is a case to be made that this doesn’t look good from an optics perspective, especially to Ukrainian soldiers who are risking their lives in the field. It appears that some people are criticizing it for political reasons; in any case, there is a general side-eye on Twitter about it.
Commenters called them out saying, “blood red are the summer and fall colors.”, “you joking right???”, “read the room. time and place. I’d assume Vogue would understand.”, “i think I’m going to puke.” and “If I was an Ukrainian soldier seeing this, I would feel super angry lol.”
