Royal Family Validated After Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee

The viability of the Royal family has been defended in the aftermath of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.

It is no secret that the future of the Royal family has come under massive scrutiny, as a result of the current economic and political circumstances. Prince Andrew’s recent sexual assault scandal caused mass outrage by virtue of the fact that he ended up avoiding jail time.

Not only that, but given that the pandemic has destroyed the livelihoods of many people, there were serious question marks over the financial benefit in light of people struggling to make ends meet.

But a common argument that is posited by supporters of the Royal family is the tourism it attracts. And the Platinum Jubilee did show that the nation was United for the event with massive crowds across the UK coming together.

Writer Bella Wallersteine sought to argue such a point by defending the economics behind the Royal family. In her comments, she said: “The cost to the public of the Royal family is about £1.50 per year per person.

“For that, we get non-political ambassadors and trade facilitators, and a tradition that attracts millions of tourists…[It is] worth every penny.” Nevertheless, this was not the full sentiment on social media.

A significant proportion of people disagreed by virtue of the fact that royalty could not be reconciled when people in the UK were suffering with rising energy costs and homelessness. Thus, people were of the view that the taxpayer money could be directed away from the Royal family to those in need.

One person wrote: “That £1.50 could be spent elsewhere. We could sell Buckingham Palace and spend the money on social housing .Liz would keep her private houses .Win ,Win.”

The Royal family has been a part and parcel of the UK system, but can it continue in light of the increasing inequality emerging?  So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
