John Hinckley, the man who once attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan is now asking for forgiveness. He shared his feelings Tuesday on ‘CBS Mornings’, saying he was sorry to the families that suffered for what he did. He struggled to recall what happened outside the Hilton hotel in 1981 when he shot then-President Reagan, Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service Agent Tim McCarthy and D.C. cop Thomas Delahanty.
Reagan nearly lost his life, while Brady was shot in the head and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Though, Hinckley says he is thankful that his assassination attempt failed to kill the President.
“The man behind the assasination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan in 1981 blamed his poor mental health for his actions. In an exclusive CBS News interview with Major Garrett, John Hinckley Jr. apologizes to the nation.”
John Hinckley Claims He’s Remorseful Over Attempted Ronald Reagan Assassination On ‘CBS Mornings’
He claims that mental illness was behind the act, and the jury even agreed, as he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. These days, Hinckley says he’s been one of the most scrutinized people in the mental healthcare system. He asked for forgiveness for the people he hurt, and Jodie Foster, which his obsession with led to him firing the shots to get her attention.
Hinckley was confined to a mental institution until 2016 and won an unconditional release just this month. He claims he did the interview with CBS to show people he’s not the monster most believe him to be.
Since his release, Hinckley has launched a semi-successful YouTube channel where he writes and sings his own original music. He even sold out a show in Brooklyn earlier this year, though it had to be canceled due to the venue being flooded with threats.
He still plans to release a 14-track album soon.
