Disney’s ‘Lightyear’ Flops At The Box Office

Disney’s ‘Lightyear’ has had an underwhelming performance at the box office after just collecting $51 million from American cinemas so far.

The movie was officially released On Friday, 17th 2022. And expectations were high given that this was going to be the first spin-off from the original Toy Story franchise. However, the results showed anything but that.

It is alleged that the movie was expected to get $70 million in the same time frame rather than the $51 million generated so far. In addition, given that the movie had reportedly cost $200 million to produce (which does not include marketing expenses),  there will need to be more tickets sold in order to recoup that back.

And when it came to the other movies that were released, it failed to outdo them. Both ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ generated more revenue.

David A. Gross, who happens to be the consultant for Franchise Entertainment Research, did not hold back on the disappointing performance: “This is a soft opening for a spin-off of one of the most successful animation series of all time.

“Toy Story’ defied gravity at the box office during its 24 year run, each episode topping the last, the last two clearing a billion dollars worldwide. But like all spin-offs, the ‘Lightyear’ story is narrower now.”

This begs the question: what could have caused the low turnout? Well, outside of an alternative explanation to the contrary, it could be due to the following reasons. First of all, the movie did not receive the best reception in the run-up to its release.

Several countries including The UAE and Malaysia banned the film on the basis that it had a same-sex kissing scene. This is hardly the type of press you need when promoting a film. Secondly, it was always going to be difficult to follow up the original Toy Story franchise. As such, the low figures could have been expected.

Time will tell if Lightyear does end up being a hit. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish.
