The HCSO reported that they were conducting this stop because a 16-year-old, Ali Alabadi, had fled the area and this caused other vehicles that were stopped to be involved in the crash. One of these vehicles was that of Wannenburg.

He was traveling with his wife and their children, Evette and Pedrie Jr. Pedrie, and his son was critically injured and they were taken to the hospital at the time of the crash. Pedrie Sr. died at the hospital about an hour after he arrived. Pedrie Jr. remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Another driver that was taken to the hospital due to the crash is Kathy Lawson. It looks as if she is still in the hospital at this time. Alabadi had two other teenagers in the car with him and he was eventually pulled over and arrested for felony murder, reckless aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, and aggravated assault bodily injury with a deadly weapon.
Wannenburg is best known for playing rugby with the South African Bulls from 2002 to 2010. He won three Super Rugby titles and five Currie Cups. He also played in Ireland, and France, and was the captain of the Denver Stampede team. He was currently playing for the Austin Elite, Blue Nulls.
His team wrote on Twitter, “We are devastated at the passing of Vodacom Bulls legend, Pedrie Wannenburg. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Wannenburg family.” Mark Alexander, who is the president of the South African rugby union team wrote, “Pedrie was a fun-loving and hard-working man and someone who gave all he had on the pitch, but afterward always had a smile on his face. He represented his country with aplomb- who will ever forget the try he scored in the narrow victory over the All Blacks in Rustenburg in 2006? To lose someone at the cusp of the rest of his life with a young family, after a long and storied rugby career is extremely sad and our thoughts are with his wife, their two childre, as well as his parents and other family members, loved one, and friends during this very difficult time.”
Our thoughts go out to the Wannenburg family.
