Maybe it’s because they are both considered royalty? Hollywood star Tom Cruise has said he and Prince William “have a lot in common” while on the red carpet for the UK premiere of Top Gun: Maverick. They were on the red carpet for the fundraising premiere of the sequel in London. Cruise has reprised his role as hot-shot Navy lieutenant Maverick, more than 30 years after the release of the original film. Here’s what you need to know.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined the 59-year-old star who arrived on the red carpet in Leicester Square for the premiere of his new film, which is taking place as a royal film performance. Speaking about his admiration for William, Cruise said: “We have a lot in common. We both love England, and we’re both aviators, we both love flying.”

The actor also expressed his joy to be back on the red carpet, saying: “I love what I do, I’ve always enjoyed it and I’m enjoying it even more now. Particularly after the last couple of years, just to have an event like this is extraordinary.”
What’s more, it looks like Tom Cruise is hoping to hit the $100 million mark at the box office with this film. So far it has a 97% “Fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes and strong presale tickets.
“At this point, I’m seeing very little reason not to expect a domestic opening weekend well over $100 million, a mark that the film will probably reach in its first three days,” said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “We’re not just talking about a new career best for Mr. Cruise, but also potentially some Memorial Day weekend records that may be going down.”
Even if the film does not reach $100 million, it is still expected to become Cruise’s highest opening weekend domestically.
