Maurice Benard’s State of Mind had a very special guest. Fans of Days of Our Lives and General Hospital know this actor as Stefan DiMera and Nikolas Cassadine. But actor Tyler Christopher has been out of the spotlight awhile and there’s so much to talk about his time off-camera. Let’s start with him opening up to Maurice Benard about a situation that fans of Britney Spears will be familiar with. As well as a big revelation he shared for the first time on the YouTube series.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on Bipolar
So, fans of Maurice Benard’s State of Mind know Benard has bipolar disorder. However, some fans might not know that Christopher also has it. During the interview, he spoke about how, for him, the mania is basically what he experiences. In fact, there have been days where he wakes up feeling it coming on and will engage in some project until it’s completed. The thing is, he said he wouldn’t like how it turned out, so he’d want to start it over.
This spilled over into his acting life as well. Despite, as he said, playing a character for 20 years, he’d still finish a performance and want to do it over again. These days, he’s apparently grown an awareness of when an episode is coming and will be able to help keep it in check before it becomes a huge problem. In fact, he has a friend who will recognize when the bipolar is coming on and will check him on it.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on addiction
Of course, with mental illness, sometimes a person will also have an addiction of some sort. For Christopher, his drug of choice was alcohol, a problem that had its roots in his childhood. While he was able to function for a long time, eventually drinking took its toll. The actor admitted to Benard that he as flat-lined three times due to his drinking. Twice, due to poisoning, once because withdraw. That wasn’t the only huge revelation he made during this episode.
Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on guardianship
Britney Spears fans know something about this subject, as Tyler pointed out. The actor’s struggles led to a serious fall that caused a traumatic brain injury. We’ll talk more about that in another one. Suffice it to say, he was in serious condition from the injury and it was ordered he would either have a guardian or be a ward of the State. Luckily for him, his sister stepped up to take on the role.
Unfortunately, however, this required him to move to Ohio. Leaving his whole life behind was hard, and Tyler said the isolation this and the pandemic led to was huge trigger for him. Interesting enough, he and Benard would talk during the pandemic and neither had any clue the other was suffering. This conversation was intense, and a great lesson—we never know what a person is going through. So, it’s always best to be kind. Stay tuned for more, because there is a hugely inspiring story ahead.
