Critics have blasted Ricky Gervais’ new Netflix series ‘SuperNature’ for being bigoted in nature over its jokes in relation to transgenders.
Critics Respond To Ricky Gervais’ Netflix Series ‘SuperNature’-‘Hoot And Holler Along With All The Bigotry’
This is not the first time that a comedian has come under fire for allegedly attacking transgenders. Dave Chappelle experienced this when his Netflix show ‘The Closer’ was deemed to include transphobic jokes.
And the fall out of this had resulted in Netflix employees staging a walkout protest to demand that he should be cancelled, even if that did not work. Much in the same way, critics of Ricky have not held back on their condemnation for his show.
According to Variety, some critics have referred to the show as trying to “score points off of a marginalized group of people.” The main criticism directed towards the comedian has been over his comments expressing his support for transgender people in the past.
That does not necessarily mean, though, that he has to cater his comedy material so that it pleases them. With that being said, Variety recognised that members of his audience did resonate with his comedy. And yet, the outlet decided to demean the audience too.
Variety added: “They [audience] hoot and holler along with all the bigotry, seeming to enjoy it more the closer it gets to the edge, the more buttons it pushes.”
The fans on social media felt that things were getting out of control. It had now gotten to a point where comedians were not being able to express their feelings fully on the basis that anybody could become offended.
And that could result in a dangerous precedent of freedom of speech being silenced. One person wrote: “I am sick of being treated like an infant. I wish this pc crap would stop. Humiliation is not a hate crime.”
Time will tell if Ricky faces the same resistance as Dave did, and if he does so, how will he respond? So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
