Viola Davis has been mocked for her portrayal of Michelle Obama in the show ‘The First Lady.’
Viola Davis Mocked For Her Portrayal Of Michelle Obama In ‘The First Lady’-‘She Overdid The Lip Thing’
Viola, for her part, certainly has some pedigree when it comes to taking on such an iconic role. After all, she has won an Ocscar before. And yet, Michelle was one of the most talked-about women in US politics when her husband Barack Obama became the first ever black president of the United States.Â
Naturally, by trying to do the show justice, Viola was experiencing a lot of apprehension. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she said: “You’re terrified whenever you start a job because you are afraid you are going to be found out — that’s big imposter syndrome.
“But with Michelle Obama, it’s like everyone has ownership over Michelle Obama.” But following the premiere of the show, (on April, 17th 2022), fans had a lot to say on the matter. And the comments on Viola’s performance were very harsh indeed.
In the clip of the show here, we can see that the fans have noticed the manner in which Viola is moving her lips. While this is clearly an attempt to mimic Michelle’s mannerisms, it did not go down very well.
One fan wrote: “Listen, I will riot if they don’t credit viola’s lips when the credits roll,” while another person stated: “I can’t be the only who thinks she overdid the lip thing.”
Despite the harsh response coming online, Viola is looking to ignore any haters. She expanded on how she is a harsh critic of herself anyway, and therefore she is only going to judge herself according to how she views her own performance.Â
As such, if she is happy with how it came across, then that is the most important thing. Viola added: “I gotta make the sister look good. It’s all those things that you don’t think about as an actor [because] it has nothing to do with acting.”
Time will tell whether the show ends up being a hit. So there you have it folks. What did you think about all of this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.Â
