BTS may be one of the biggest boy bands in the world, but they could be set for a break with reports that they might be obligated to do military service in South Korea.

According to the country’s laws, there is the mandatory conscription of men from the age of 18-28. This would be for a period of 18 months, as a minimum. Clearly, the band’s members would fit into that range. And yet, it is not known what the selection criteria is in deciding who gets chosen.
This report arrives on the back end of increasing tensions between South Korea and North Korea. The latter had recently tested a new missile, indicating their intention to be heavily armed. That is why the country will need the help of everyone who is available.
Gunn Kim, who happens to be the South Korean ambassador to Britain, had this to say: “It is very much expected that young Korean men serve the country and those BTS members are role models for many young-generation Koreans.
“Most of our people expect that our members of BTS will fulfil their obligation as citizens of Korea. Eventually I think that will happen.” In reality, this news has been a long time coming.
In 2020, the country had allowed the band to sidestep their service by postponing it until they were 30. And now that some members are approaching that age, it has increased the pressure on them to join.
The response of social media to this was mixed. A certain subset of people felt that the group members would be fine, while others questioned whether they would be able to adapt.
One person wrote: “Babes, three of them are black belts in taekwondo and the rest usually go to the gym. They’ll be okay,” while another stated: “Yes now I get it…… taekwondo and gym time will protect you from bombs and guns…. I feel safer for them now…”
