The Cannes Film Festival Bans ‘Anyone Linked To The Russian Government’

The Cannes Film Festival has unilaterally declared its decision to ban any people associated with a Russian delegation/government from attending.

The Cannes Film Festival Bans ‘Anyone Linked To The Russian Government’

This is ground-breaking news and not just because of the conflict that has been going on. The festival is set for a major milestone, as it celebrates its 75th year.

And with the world firmly having their eyes fixed on the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the organisers of the festival wanted to show solidarity with all those being affected by taking a stand.

In an official statement given by the festival, a representative said: “We join our voices with those who oppose this unacceptable situation and denounce the attitude of Russia and its leaders.

“It has been decided that we will not welcome official Russian delegations nor accept the presence of anyone linked to the Russian government.” Nevertheless, this decision has not gone down well with everyone.

And this is for the following reasons. First of all, these actions could potentially lead to innocent Russian people being affected simply because they happen to have a certain nationality.

Much in the same way, like the economic sanctions will do, there is a feeling that such measures will disproportionately target ordinary citizens. Sergei Loznitsa, who happens to be a Ukrainian filmmaker, has spoken about how censorship is not the right way to go.

After all, there are many Russian people who oppose what is currently going on in Ukraine. In an interview, he said: “When I hear today these calls to ban Russian films, I think of these [filmmakers] who are good people. They are victims as we are of this aggression.”

And Sergei’s comments were echoed on social media. A certain subset of people felt that this flew in the face of freedom of speech, and it was clearly a contradiction in terms. One person wrote: It’s nonsense, they say they are for freedom of expression for freedom of art and at the same time they amalgamate.”

Time will tell whether this decision has any further consequences, but given what we have seen so far, there is an increasing pressure being directed towards the Russian regime.
